Prepositions (Part 2) On, in, at

Prepositions are used to indicate a relationship between noun or pronoun with other words or clauses in a sentence. Despite being three of the most common prepositions "on," "in," and "at" are one of those that make a lot of people question their knowledge on prepositions (is it on prepositions or in prepositions here?). You questioned it, didn't you?

So, here we are to help you understand them better. If you have any other doubts, hit us up in the comments anytime.

On, in and at are ones that function as both preposition of 'place' and of 'time' based on the context. In simple terms, they are used to indicate the position of the noun and the time in relation to the noun.

"On" is used to indicate the surface or placement of the noun (place) and day/ date (time)

Examples:

  • The ball is on the table

  • I will go to church on sunday

  • The keys were on top of the fridge

  • I was born on the 12th of december

  • Don't jump on the bed

"In" is used to indicate volume or enclosure of something (place; within the boundaries of something) and years/ months/ season/ part of the day (longer duration)
Examples:
  • My grandpops was born in 1923

  • I kept the fruits in the fridge

  • I'll meet you there in 15 minutes

  • We are going to travel in December

  • My dad brought my pup home in a small box

Now that we've discussed on and in, let's get into those really confusing questions, is it in the bus or on the bus / in the car or on the car ?
A lot of people have a lot of different explanations for it but let's break it down for you.
You say 'on' for larger vehicles which allows you to move around before you get into your seat and 'in' for smaller vehicles which requires you to immediately get into your seat without the luxury of mobility.

"At" is used to indicate a specific point or location (place) and a particular time
Examples:
  • I met Tia at the airport

  • The meeting will start at 10, not a second late

  • He had happy tears at that very moment I broke the news to him

  • I'll be at home, eating my gorgeous dinner on Sunday

  • We won't be late! We'll leave at the crack of dawn
